About Red Rooster

The Red Rooster Story | Mission | Community

Red Rooster began when the Kailis family opened the Kelmscott restaurant in Western Australia in 1972. From its humble beginning it has grown to become Australia's largest roast chicken operator.

The business grew as a privately owned and operated business until the early 80's when it was purchased by Coles Myer Ltd.

In 1992 Red Rooster acquired the Big Rooster chain, which was operating predominantly in Queensland. These stores were re-branded as Red Rooster stores, lifting the number of stores to 230 across Australia.

Big Rooster had been operating franchise stores in Toowoomba and Townsville since 1979, so this acquisition also represented Red Rooster's first venture into franchising.

In May 2002, Perth based Australian Fast Foods acquired Red Rooster from Coles Myer Ltd, bringing many years experience and expertise in the roast chicken category.

Today, Red Rooster has over 360 stores and employs around 5000 staff. In addition to our long-established roast A-grade fresh chicken and famous chips, Red Rooster also offers healthy baguettes and salads, plus delicious burgers and wraps.

And we continue to innovate with new menu items.
